SLEEP APNEA - WHAT IS IT?

The Most Common Symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
in adults include:

  • Loud Snoring: Almost all people who have sleep apnea snore.
  • Excessive Daytime Sleepiness: Examples of excessive daytime sleepiness includes falling asleep when you normally should not, such as while you are eating, talking, or driving.

Other Common Symptoms of Sleep Apnea Include:

  • Specific episodes of not breathing (apnea), which may occur as few as 2 times per hour (mild apnea) to more than 50 times per hour (severe apnea). How many episodes experienced determines how severe your sleep apnea is. When a person stops breathing or has slowed breathing during their sleep, it may result in reduced levels of oxygen in the blood and possible brain damage if left unchecked.
  • Restless sleep - tossing and turning during the night.
  • Nighttime choking spells, gasping, sweating, and chest pain.
  • Waking up feeling tired, having problems with memory and concentration, feeling irritable and tired, and experiencing personality/mood changes.
  • Morning or night headaches. About half of all people with sleep apnea report headaches.
  • Heartburn or a sour taste in the mouth at night.
  • Swelling of the legs - Mostly in obese adults and those with poor circulation.
  • Getting up during the night to urinate (nocturia).
